Keeping Your Financial Aid

Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for Financial Aid 2008-2009

Students receiving federal and/or state financial aid must make Satisfactory Academic Progress according the policy that follows.

Qualitative GPA Requirements

Students are required to maintain a 2.00 cumulative grade point average or GPA. Students whose semester and cumulative GPA's fall below standard are reviewed by the Academic Standards Committee at the end of each semester. Students who are not making Satisfactory Academic Progress are placed on academic warning, probation, continued probation or suspension.

Financial Aid Warning, Probation, Continued Probation, or Suspension for GPA

Students placed on Academic warning for a below minimum required GPA will be placed on Financial Aid warning. Students placed on Academic probation or continued probation for a below minimum required GPA will be placed on Financial Aid probation or continued probation. Students placed on Academic suspension will be placed on Financial Aid suspension. Students on Financial Aid suspension are no longer eligible to receive financial aid.

Quantitative Maximum Time Frame to Complete Degree

Students must complete the required number of credit hours for a BFA or BM degree within a maximum time frame of six academic years of full-time enrollment.

Minimum Credits Attempted

Each student must attempt a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester to be eligible for a full-time financial aid award. To comply with the Satisfactory Academic Progress maximum time frame policy above, each student must earn a minimum of 24 credit hours each academic year. Incomplete and withdrawal classes will be counted as credits attempted. Repeated classes for credit will be counted as credits attempted.

* Non-credit and remedial classes are not included in degree programs and will not be counted as credits attempted.

Washington State Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements

Students must complete the minimum required credits by the end of the each semester in which state funds were calculated and disbursed. Terms are defined as follows:

Full-time Enrollment

Enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester and complete a minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year.

Three-quarter time Enrollment

Enrolled for a minimum of 9 credit hours per semester and complete a minimum of 18 credit hours per academic year.

Half-time Enrollment

Enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours per academic year

Summer Session Enrollment

Students must be enrolled at least half-time and complete a minimum of 6 credit hours to maintain financial aid eligibility.

Washington State Need Grant Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements

Students receiving state need grants will be monitored at the end of each semester for completion of required minimum credits. Students who have unsatisfactory academic progress will receive written notice from the Office of Financial Aid at the conclusion of each semester. See above for minimum credit requirements.

Probation

Any State Need Grant recipient who completes at least 50% but less than 100% of the minimum number of credits during a semester for which State funding was calculated and disbursed will be considered making unsatisfactory academic progress and will be placed on Probation the subsequent semester.

Credits not completed or deficit credits, in the semester for which the grant was disbursed, must be made up during the following semester. Students will be allowed only one semester of Probation to make up the deficit after which, if credits are not made up, they will be suspended from the State Need Grant Program. If credits are made up, students will regain satisfactory academic progress.

Suspension

Any State Need Grant recipient who completes less than 50% of the minimum number of credits during the semester for which aid was calculated and disbursed will be denied further disbursements of the State Need Grant, and/or

Any State Need Grant recipient who is currently on Probation and does not complete deficit credits from the previous semester will be denied further consideration for the State Need Grant.

Reinstatement for State Funding After Unsatisfactory Progress

Students who do not establish satisfactory academic progress during probation may petition through the Office of Financial Aid for a continued probationary status due to extenuating circumstances. Students who are considered on suspension from the State Need Grant may petition through the Office of Financial Aid for reinstatement the following semester due to extenuating circumstances. Students attaining an approved petition will be placed in probationary status for the following semester.

Alaska Commission on Post-secondary Education Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements

The State of Alaska requires that a student recipient of State of Alaska aid be in good academic standing according to the requirements of Cornish College of the Arts.
